SHIMONI

Shimoni. A fishing village and a sleepy trading port - a traditional port with dhows still plying their wares between Tanzania & Zanzibar calling in regularly.

THE ISLAND

Wasini Island, l km. out to sea, is an 8 km x 3 km fossilised coral island and there are three villages on the island. Details are below.

Value Rating
****

WASINI

The largest community and reputed to be dwellers that originally moved from the mainland for protection from slave traders and perhaps the authorities chasing the traders! A strong Arab influence has created a colourful, interesting community, steeped in history.

MKWIRO

Mkwiro Village. Inhabited by mainly the Digo tribe and the largest fishing community in the area.

NYUMA MAJI

(Swahili: Place of Water). An interesting name for this, the smallest village, as there is no ground fresh water on the island and residents have to rely on rainwater and ferrying water across in dug-out canoes. Basked in sun for most of the year Wasini Island hosts a spectacular display of giant, ancient baobab trees, coral sculptures from 1,000's of years of sea erosion, and birdlife which exceeds 80 varieties. Interesting mangrove swamps, with exciting coral outcrops hidden within, stretch from the island.

RAMISI RIVER

Ramisi River. Feeding into Funzi Bay a river that takes you at its mouth into amazing mangrove swamps which turn into true jungle. Excellent bird life & the chance to find the sea-water crocodile resting on its banks.

FUNZI ISLAND

Across Funzi Bay the island has mangrove in places to the waters edge, and also a fantastic white sandy beach. There is a small village on the island & the luxurious Funzi Keys Lodge.

CHARLIE CLAW'S WASINI ISLAND

A two hour drive from Mombasa, this area is real Africa.

We cannot offer you large hotels, discos or large shopping centres. We can show you a part of the Kenyan Coast which has remained traditional and which has changed little over thousands of years. The local people are friendly and interesting. Fisherman leave daily aboard their dugout canoes made from a whole tree, with lateen rig sails unfurled, to return early evening with a catch of the freshest fish which we make good use of.

We have a policy of helping the 2 primary schools on Wasini island: taking the children on educational/environmental tours and also sponsoring teachers, children for secondary education and requirements for each school. Various families are also helped with school fees. In an area where hardship can be commonplace we also try to use as much of the guest generated funds as possible, either directly from guests or from income, to help the local community and infrastructure. Believing that future protection of the environment is in the hands of the children we are also involved in conservation education programmes. Please contact us if you feel that you would like additional information or be able to help in any way.

Within one hours drive you can reach the sea-side tourist resort of Diani. A different world. Here there are large, friendly hotels, discos and shopping malls. Also a local airport from where you can take a plane to some of the best game parks in the world - Masai Mara, Ngororogoro Crater, Serengeti and more.

Mombasa city is a bustling sea-side port steeped in history. A day well spent shopping and visitng Fort Jesus and perhaps Bamburi Nature Trail - the first ever converted, reclaimed quarry, now an educational nature park.

Up in the hills only 1 hour from Shimoni is the Shimba Hills Reserve - home of the rare Sable & Roan antelope. Worth a visit up into the coolness of the hills.

Wasini Island is situated off Shimoni village, a small traditional fishing and trading centre close to Tanzania. The whole area has remained largely untouched as its drowsy survival is protected by the 15km. access road from the main coastal Tanzania/Kenya highway.

Apart from snorkelling or diving with us we can also take you :

* On land and sea bird-watching tours
* on motorised canoes exploring the uninhabited islands
* On river trips to find the sea-water crocodile ( Don't worry - only in the river, not snapping at your fins! )
* Exploring the local villages - rarely visited.
* Day & half day tours up into the Shimba Hills Reserve - home of many elephants & the rare roan and sable antelope.

We can also arrange for deep-sea fishing with Pat Simon Hemphill Sea Adventures - the holders of most of the Kenyan records and a family run business with over 30 years of experience.
